Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded British Technology to Locate Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Investigation Learns
An informant has disclosed an official investigation that the UK left behind sensitive equipment allowing the Taliban to track down Afghans who collaborated with international military.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger
The whistleblower, known as Person A, explained that people concerned by the security lapse were told to move homes and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
Lawmakers are looking into the Conservative government's response of a massive leak of private information affecting nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to come to the UK to escape the regime.
The Information Breach Occurred
An electronic document containing their personal data, comprising identities, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by an official stationed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.
The incident was discovered months later, when the names of several individuals who had applied to relocate to Britain were posted on online platforms.
Taliban Capabilities
“There seems to be this misconception that militant forces lack the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed MPs.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can locate your precise location. That's precisely what intelligence groups achieved.”
During testimony about whether the Taliban had access to advanced decryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They possess all resources.”
Impact of the Data Breach
Initial findings provided to the committee suggested that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of individuals impacted by the breach had been killed.
A gag order regarding the breach was implemented in last year and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from public disclosure until July 2025.
Security Recommendations
Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the aid group she was working with told individuals at risk they were working with that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been compromised”.
“We advised that they relocate when possible and switched their contact details. These represented the crucial data that, if authorities had access to these details, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower contested that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the acquisition of the records by the Taliban was “not significantly alter present danger”.
“The crucial point is that these Afghans are in hiding from militant forces; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to former occupations.”
She detailed horrific treatment endured by concerned people, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to force relatives to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
