Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to personally create the controversial product as part of a personal collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the continuing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Future Plans
The founder revealed how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence was undermined following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
