British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
