Weather experts have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

The Mercury Expected to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this indicated the weather could to trigger major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
