Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
Arne Slot admitted that it was expected for doubts to be raised about his position following another convincing loss against the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in 12 matches, representing the club's worst run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league champions on a tough night at Anfield.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got a lot of backing from management,” Slot stated.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and secure a win of course but if you are coaching a team and not doing well then it's expected that doubts arise.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. This isn't the initial instance I’ve been in a difficult position but it's crucial that we improved our results.”
Conversations with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the team officials, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and for me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me constantly each day to say they back me.”
He added, “During our regular exchanges I sense the belief. But I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Issues and Player Reaction
Slot lamented recurring failings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League defeat, namely wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to all,” Jones stated.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past being angry internally. I’m at the point currently where I simply lack the words.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I play for the side I follow. I support them, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a period such as this with performances like these.”
He finished, “However we still have the crest on our chest. And until it is gone, we'll continue to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to the top, show everyone once more what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the greatest side in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
