That Grisly Animated Film Conclusion That Lingers Viewers
Out of every adult-oriented animated films I have personally watched, no other has stuck with me as much as the dread-soaked conclusion of the explicitly bloody as well as overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, the Spanish writer-director developed a dark, bleak , frequently brutal universe that included some tiny , forlorn hints of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars appears as it came from a drive to expand the medium further, the director explained that it was more an attempt to express a universal, cross-cultural theme about “the shared root of all wars.”
This theme is expressed via a squad of colorful pastel bears , obviously modeled after a well-known line of lovable characters.
Maturing in a society centered on warmongering and the defense industry, a lot of the bears are fixated on killing the mythical beasts, due to a religious scripture that claims the bears they used to be kings of the woods, before the horned beings drove them out.
Some haven’t fully bought into the brainwashing, and choose to try out drugs or fornicate in the woods.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these vivid animals show genitals and definite libidos.
For one notably brutal, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the war against unicorns becomes a route to power — and particularly to supremacy over his gentler, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , an apparent sociopath , and as horror dominates his unit and claims his teammates one by one, he seizes more and more influence on his own behalf, in increasingly violent, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own nightmare, in the form of an expanding, harmful creature in their forest.
“In the early stages, it appears as a humorous movie,” the filmmaker stated. “But then it turns into a more dramatic and melancholic film. And in the finale, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the most quirky movies from a legendary filmmaker, which find a mischievous joy in letting drawn beings curse, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Afterward it evolves into something more like a more grim movie from that artist, with increasingly visual gore and a palpable relation to the actual suffering of war.
By the end, it’s a full-on extreme drama massacre.
The terror which makes the film an ideal spooky-season movie starts much sooner than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated gorehounds, for lovers of intense movies who desire to see a movie they have not viewed until now, and who can handle a story that offers absolutely no punches.
View it in a dimly lit space without any distractions, and the finale will dig into your mind and linger.
