The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
