People have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A senior representative knowledgeable about the discussions said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to close the differences between the both parties.

Key Points in Discussions

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies distribution
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Public Feeling

In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home now and until every captive return none of us will be secure."

"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens desire the war to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the location of the music event, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling continued.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the night falls, the dread comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Health Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported additional dead people had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers said.

The region's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
