When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
They watch a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the children Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. As a youth, he fights the influence of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
