The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core issue, did not confirm his residency plans promptly after his victory in November.

"This decision rested on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
